Maine Lobster Series
To truly experience Maine at its best, you must embrace the early morning hours and journey to the coast. As dawn breaks , the gentle fog envelops the shores, the waters remain tranquil, and small boats dot the landscape, creating a picturesque scene that embodies the charm of this beautiful state. Join us as we take you to a hidden gem in Maine, a place few have visited unless they proudly call themselves lobstermen !
Early in the mornings, hundreds of boats of all sizes come back to the docks of Maine full of one delicious seafood—LOBSTER ! From ocean floors to our plates come over 110,000,000 (million) pounds of lobsters out of the State of Maine. Did you know that lobstermen must complete a 2-year apprenticeship before they can captain a boat? An up-close look at the lobster industry is coming next, including answering this question: What is the biggest lobster ever caught?
There's a universal consensus that Maine lobster is a culinary delight, whether it's served as freshly steamed with melted butter or in a classic Maine-style lobster roll. Early mornings at the docks reveal a bustling scene, with numerous lobstermen diligently at work. Each lobster undergoes a careful hand inspection. Remarkably, some Maine lobsters can weigh nearly thirty pounds as they are pulled from the depths of the Atlantic. Tomorrow, we'll explore the final stage before these delectable creatures are ready to hit the market for our enjoyment.
Behold, a stunning blue lobster! These remarkable crustaceans come in a dazzling array of colors, including shades of green, yellow, gray, calico, and even the rare albino. After fishing boats spill their bounty onto the docks, the drama unfolds as forklifts whisk away crates brimming with lobsters into the cool embrace of the freezer house. Here, each lobster is swiftly nestled into spacious floor bins filled with perfectly chilled water, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the mighty freezer trucks. As the crates are meticulously stacked for transport, a flurry of ice is tossed over them to maintain their pristine freshness. These colossal freezer trucks then embark on their journey, delivering these delectable ocean treasures to markets, restaurants, and processing plants alike. With over 110 million pounds harvested from the depths of the State of Maine each year, the journey from the ocean floor to our dinner plates is nothing short of extraordinary.

When one travels to Maine, there is one thing that is an absolute—a lobster roll 🦞🦞. The average cost is a whopping $35! That is an investment in a sandwich. Many places offer this Maine staple, so be selective, as they are not all the same. After a lot of research, we opted to try Schutty's, a food trailer, for our inaugural lobster roll. The locals told us we made the right decision. Wow, wow, and more wow! Every bite was full of fresh Maine lobster in a tangy mayo sauce. Locals assured us we made the right choice—and they were spot on 👍! Each bite was packed with fresh Maine lobster, complemented by a tangy mayo sauce. Wow, wow, and more wow! As one takes their first bite, the $35 worrisome investment instantly fades into a new favorite sandwich when in the state of Maine!
Fort Kent, ME
The Canadian Border, Whoopie Pies, and Poutine—oh my! You can experience all of this and so much more in the charming town of Fort Kent. Let’s start with a satisfying stop at Rock's Family Diner. Since 1945, this beloved establishment has catered to locals and the occasional traveler alike. Picture yourself at the counter, indulging in a plate of French fries smothered in chunks of white cheddar cheese and rich homemade gravy. You’ll definitely need a fork for this one! And don’t worry, you can pick up the plate to savor every last drop of gravy. Be sure to grab some homemade Whoopie Pies on your way out; they’re so popular that the diner will even ship them to fans across the country. A visit to Rock's is truly a delicious and hearty experience!

What’s the strangest canned food you can think of? Many might point to SPAM, but in Maine, there's something even more unusual: canned Brown Bread. Picture a giant bran muffin encased in a suit of armor. To get to it, you have to open both ends of the can and slide it out—it’s quite the production! Once freed, it emerges with ribbed lines on the sides. You can warm it up and top it with a variety of spreads, from cream cheese to jam, and yes, even baked beans. A shoutout to B&M in Maine for this intriguing, if not entirely glamorous, culinary concept. While it does the job, I wouldn’t recommend serving it at a dinner party!

If that doesn’t qualify as a dazzling stroke of marketing brilliance for Chow Maine, the Asian food distributor in the heart of Maine, then I’m at a loss to envision anything more ingenious!
