Northern Alabama
North Alabama Stateline - You see what I see in the 1st photo? There are two Alabama Welcome Signs there - the modern day and in the background is a 1942 marble one. I prefer the marble one! Hope you are ready for an unforgettable month trekking it through Alabama!
Cherokee/Florence - Lions and Coons, Oh My! Two one-of-a-kind in the world - Deep in the Northwestern woods of Alabama lie 185 coon dogs from all over the world RIP. Within the hour one finds a live lion, Leo III, resting on the Northern Alabama University campus.
Florence/Muscle Shoals - The locals run over an outlaw daily and eat slaw dogs in the "The Hit Recording Capital in the World". It is true that a hanged outlaw was intentionally buried under the road so the locals could run over him each day. A homemade mustard slaw blankets a bright red-hot dog is rated as one of the best hotdogs in the United States.
Tuscumbia - Visiting Helen Kellers Musuem makes a personal impact on my life forward. Her birthplace home is now a museum honoring her life's achievements. A must when visiting Alabama.
Muscle Shoals/Vincent/Decatur - A Dam Road trip moving from Muscle Shoals westward. The Dam Store closed so no gas or refreshments at the Dam store. Entering Decatur, Alabama for some of the best Dam BBQ Chicken - White BBQ sauce - a Northwestern Alabama thing! Dam!
Danville/Double Springs - Today needs to be entitled, "Unique Finds". First, a soldier dressed in 1/2 union and 1/2 confederate uniform carrying a broken sword in one hand. Entitled, "Dual Destiny', as the only county in Alabama which never took a side. Next, an empty field turned into a true roadside attraction of perfectly placed history relics. Lastly an out of the way human inspiring small museum - Jesse Owens Museum. A jump pit showing the unbelievable jump of over 26 feet by the one and only Jesse Owens.
Cullman - "Wow!" day of two beautiful places to explore. Walking through this covered bridge, stopping many times enjoying the cool waters and peaceful breeze. Eighteen minutes away is a beautiful 4-acre garden which a monk spent 50 years to create 125 amazing miniature world landmarks. Out of materials from rocks to cold cream bottles. Clarkson Covered Bridge and Ave Maria Grotto.
Woodville/Fackler - Oh My Rocks! Two massive visits today of creative rocks. Mother Nature's hand at her finest with the huge gaping entrance of Cathedral Caverns. Man's hand at creating a Rock Zoo along a very quiet rural road. Both offer so much to admire, gawk at and just say Oh My Rocks! Cathedral Caverns State Park and the town of Fackler, Alabama.
Menton/Fort Payne/Scottsboro - A full day of cool findings - An old church wedged into a massive rock. A 17-foot dino made out of 10 years of accumulating junk named, Junkasaurus. The birthplace of the country band - Alabama. Last cool find is an unending warehouse selling all our lost and unclaimed baggage and its belongings in Scottsboro Alabama.
Huntsville - Duck Hunting for a prize, saddened by a tragic love story legend and going to the moon and beyond all-in-one day. Showering every day, I will remember today as my Lucky Rubber Duck prize proudly is proudly displayed on my shower wall.
Madison/Gadsden - A most interesting day today in Alabama - Morning was a scavenger hunt searching for mini brass trains (for a reward of a wooden train whistle. Afternoon was learning about a 15-year-old being remembered for her bravery in the Civil War. Evening was an unexpected finding of a memorial bench where an innocent black man was lynched by a gang of angry, white residents. What a day!
Amazing Alabama Finds today - Seeing our country off the main highways brings so much - an abandoned sawdust burner standing 50 feet into the air. A drive-in experience managed by the same family for sixty-nine years for the local residents. The inventor of the typewriter, John Pratt, buried in a small family cemetery. A bronze plaque, near his tombstone, tells of his story.
Birmingham - Nicknamed, "The Magic City". An entire day in the heart of Birmingham. Two awesome encounters - Heaviest Corner on Earth sustaining 4 massive skyscrapers and a monument reminding the world Veterans Day began in Birmingham.
Birmingham - The oldest baseball field in the US still offering games to families since 1910. Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson & Babe Ruth are just a few icons who played ball there. African Village is a one-man artist studio in his front yard with hundreds of creative works teaching about African America History. When Joe Minter is home, he will take you on an unforgettable journey down the history of blacks in the US.
Birmingham - Standing underneath a 100,000-pound 57-foot Vulcan and self-exploring a massive historic steel furnace plant built in the 1870's was a "Land of the Giants" experience.
Birmingham - An emotionally charged day walking within a 4-block radius of the center of the brutal Civil Rights unrest in 1963. Four young girls died from a racially motivated bombing. Thousands of students harassed, attacked by K9's and knocked to the ground by powerful firemen hoses.
Oxford/Anniston/Northport - A giant, fun day in Alabama finding giant roadside attractions! A 20-foot pizza dude, bringing psychedelic pizza curb style, at Mellow Mushroom Pizza in Oxford. A 33-foot with a 15-foot-square seat "sits" as the largest office chair in the world in Anniston. Rusty, the Big Red Dog, stands alert atop of a folk-art studio in the small, quaint town of Northport. All in Alabama.
Birmingham/Anniston - Breakfast of Champions - BBQ ribs at Dreamland BBQ. A full day visiting two sites remembering a tragic day of the "Freedom Riders" in 1961.
U of Alabama - Walking the 223-acre campus. Tip toeing up to Goldie as to never wake a sleeping giant. Then a personal escort into the empty Alabama Crimson Tide football stadium. Concluding by standing at the double doors where Governor Wallace stood blocking the initial entrance of 2 black students in 1963. President Kennedy had the National Guard remove the governor.
Calera/Montevallo - Little Towns & Big Finds - Hand built doorless rock church, 30+ tree carvings in one park and an ordinary garage taking off in flight.
Montevallo - Literally stepping through time at American Village - awesome live reenactments, historic replica buildings, 35 miniatures of our 400-year history and a National Veteran's Shrine. A very inspirational, impactful day.
Childersburg - Deep in central Alabama is a place like no other. A place offering nature sounds of slow running waters and chirping birds. One of the only original covered bridges (1861 built) and a working mill still standing in the original spot it was built. Kymulga Mill located along the Talladega Creek.
Lincoln - The roar of the crowd! The screeching of the tires! A full rush at the Talladega Superspeedway! NASCAR's biggest and baddest track in the world!
Northern Alabama - Enjoying the creativity of b/w photography in northern parts of Alabama.
