Roger Williams, the founder of the State of Rhode Island, lived a life marked by ambition, courage, and determination. He guided the early colonies towards the separation of church and state and established the first Baptist church in America. His opposition to the confiscation of Native American lands led to his banishment from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He also compiled the first dictionary of Native American languages. In the capital city of Rhode Island, a 435-acre park named The Roger Williams Park honors his memory. Over the next few days, we will delve into this magnificent park, often hailed as 'the People's Park.'

In the Rhode Island State House, a bronze plaque commemorates an unforgettable story known as "The Immortal Chaplains." A Methodist Minister, a Jewish Rabbi, a Dutch Reformed Minister, and a Roman Catholic Priest were aboard the SS Dorchester when it was struck by a German torpedo. As the ship began sinking and water flooded the lower decks, these four clergymen distributed the limited lifejackets available. Realizing there were not enough for all, they selflessly surrendered their own jackets to save fellow passengers. They stayed on deck, aiding others until the very end. This plaque is displayed in the State Capitol to eternally honor their sacrifice and to inspire future generations with the meaning of true selflessness.
