The "Spite Tower" was built to annoy his neighbor! Back in 1905 two neighbors had a falling out.  The story goes like this.  The neighbors are the Hathaways and the Manchesters.  The Manchester's sisters would signal their brother Abraham when dinner was ready by placing a white cloth in the window of their home that could be seen from his store.  Mr.  Hathaway was so angry with their falling out, he decided to build a tower obstructing the view of the white cloth.  This is a true Rhode Island story.  The tower still stands today!  That is taking "Spite" to the extreme, wouldn't you say?
